Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes in Winter Garden

The gi turns sleeves, collars and lapels into part of the technical puzzle. Learn why those details reward patience, precision and timing.

Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: what to know

Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practiced in the traditional jacket, pants and belt. You use the uniform as part of the technical exchange, and your partner can use yours too. Learning to establish and defend grips adds a tactical layer to positions, escapes and submissions.

At ATT Winter Garden, the existing teen/adult BJJ program includes Gi sessions alongside No-Gi. Coach Marcel Ferreira is a sixth-degree black belt; students can learn the concepts through structured practice rather than trying to figure everything out through sparring.

02 / BJJ GUIDE

What makes Gi Jiu-Jitsu technical?

An effective grip can help you maintain posture, interrupt an opponent’s movement or create a transition. Beginners quickly discover that grabbing harder is not the same as controlling better. The key is learning where to grip, when to release and how to move your feet and hips along with your hands.

Gi training also teaches defensive awareness. Since a partner can use your collar or sleeve, you practice protecting those grips, keeping balanced posture and avoiding exposing your neck or arms while escaping.

01

Grip fighting

Understand when a sleeve or collar grip helps and when it puts you at risk.

02

Guard and passing

Use posture, frames and angles to work through common positions.

03

Patience under pressure

Make small, controlled adjustments instead of relying on speed alone.

Do you need to buy a gi before the first class?

Before purchasing anything, ask ATT Winter Garden what the first trial requires and whether the academy has specific gi standards. Brands, sizing rules and colors vary by school, and a poorly fitted uniform can make training uncomfortable.

If you already own a gi, make sure it is clean and in good repair. Keep nails trimmed, remove jewelry and bring water. Tell the coach if it is your first BJJ class: the rules for uniform grips and submissions will be new to you.

01

Ask before buying

Confirm the academy’s uniform rules and trial expectations.

02

Expect repetition

Grips and positional details become useful through repeated controlled drilling.

03

Compare formats

Gi and No-Gi can complement one another without either being the “only correct” style.
