Beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: what to know

If you have never stepped onto a mat, the terminology alone can sound intimidating: guard, mount, shrimping, passing and rolling. In beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you learn those ideas a little at a time. Your first goal is not winning a sparring round. It is understanding where to place your body, how to move safely and when to ask for help.

At American Top Team Winter Garden, the existing teen and adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program welcomes complete beginners. Coach Marcel Ferreira is a sixth-degree BJJ black belt, and the academy offers both Gi and No-Gi training. You can explore the complete program before deciding which class fits your week.

What beginner training actually teaches

The first techniques are about position and control. A student may practice getting back to a stable base, escaping an unfavorable position, moving around a partner and protecting space before attempting more complex submissions. These fundamentals matter whether your eventual goal is fitness, self-defense or competition.

Expect a mix of explanation, controlled partner drilling and, depending on the class, optional or supervised live practice. Pace and intensity should be discussed with the coach. Learning to tap early and respect a partner’s tap is a core safety habit, not a sign of weakness.

01

Position before submissions

Learn why being balanced and in control makes technique more reliable.

02

Repeat the basics

Simple escapes and movement patterns get more useful as they become familiar.

03

Build good training habits

Ask questions, communicate with partners and train consistently rather than intensely every day.

How to prepare for your first few classes

Choose a class time from the current schedule and confirm the booking details with the academy. Arrive early enough to find the training area and explain that you are a first-time student. Ask which clothing is appropriate for that session; Gi and No-Gi use different training attire.

Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed, remove jewelry, bring water and follow the academy’s hygiene rules. If an exercise feels uncomfortable, tell the coach. You do not need to memorize techniques before arriving; instructors are there to show you what to do.

01

Before class

Check the session format, bring water and let the instructor know your experience level.

02

During class

Prioritize controlled movement and listen when a coach corrects your positioning.

03

After class

Write down one useful concept and give yourself recovery time before the next session.

QUESTIONS / ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

These answers describe general Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training and the existing ATT Winter Garden programs. Contact the academy for class-specific details and the latest schedule.

Do I have to be fit before joining BJJ?

No. Beginners often develop conditioning through training. Start at a manageable pace, and check with a health professional if you have a condition or injury that affects exercise.

Will I have to spar on day one?

Class activities depend on the session and coach. Ask about the format in advance; controlled drilling and learning safe movement come first.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the same as MMA?

No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on grappling, positions and submissions. MMA combines multiple disciplines and includes striking.

Where can I book a beginner class?
