Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt System: What Beginners Should Know
A guide to common BJJ belt colors and what consistent technical development means, without promising a promotion timetable.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt progression: what to know
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses colored belts to represent stages of development. For adults, the familiar sequence is white, blue, purple, brown and black. Some organizations also recognize advanced ranks after black belt. Each school follows its own promotion process within the broader sport’s traditions and applicable federation rules.
For a beginner, the belt is only one part of the story. Training habits, safe movement, positional knowledge and the ability to apply technique responsibly matter more than rushing toward the next color.
The five main adult belts
White belt: the starting stage. Students learn classroom etiquette, movement, balance, escapes, defensive positions and basic terminology. Progress often means understanding situations that once felt confusing.
Blue belt: commonly associated with a working foundation across major positions. Purple belt: increasing technical depth, options and timing. Brown belt: refined decision-making and broader command of techniques. Black belt: a high level of expertise that still involves continued learning.
There is no universal calendar that guarantees a belt change. Promotions depend on the instructor’s judgment, performance and relevant school or federation requirements.
Understanding positions
Can you recognize, maintain and escape common positions?
Quality of technique
Are movements more controlled and repeatable?
Training habits
Do you practice responsibly and help create a safe environment?
How are kids belts different?
Children typically follow a youth belt structure rather than moving through the adult colors in the same way. Exact colors, stripe sequences and age eligibility can depend on the organization and its rules. Ask the coach for the academy’s current promotion standards.
ATT Winter Garden has Kids I for ages 4–7 and Kids II for ages 8–13, according to its current program information. In youth training, encouragement, skill development and consistent attendance matter more than comparisons with other children.
Keep the focus on learning
Progress includes focus, movement and respectful partner practice.
Ask about stripes
Different schools may use stripes differently between belt promotions.
Avoid pressure
Every student learns at an individual pace.
How to think about belt goals
Ask your coach for one or two technical goals you can work on during the next few weeks. Those might be improving posture in closed guard, using a frame in an escape, or recognizing when to release a grip. These are clearer and more useful than demanding a belt after a set number of classes.
Coach Marcel Ferreira, the head coach at ATT Winter Garden, is a sixth-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. If you are comparing classes, first learn about the teen/adult program and the kids program; confirm promotion details directly with the academy.
