No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Training in Winter Garden, FL
Learn to control positions, escape pressure and move with purpose without relying on grips in a traditional jiu-jitsu uniform.
No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: what to know
No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the grappling side of BJJ practiced without the traditional jacket and pants. Since you cannot rely on cloth grips, you learn to manage distance, use body positioning and establish control through movement and contact. It is technical, demanding and useful for anyone curious about modern grappling.
American Top Team Winter Garden lists Gi and No-Gi training within its teen/adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program. The program currently lists a Saturday midday No-Gi session and additional mixed Gi/No-Gi times. Confirm the specific format on the current schedule before visiting.
What is different in a No-Gi class?
Without a jacket collar or sleeve to grip, you depend more on body positioning, wrist control, underhooks, frames and angle changes. You still learn the foundational ideas of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: improving position, escaping danger and choosing safe, controlled submissions.
For new students, No-Gi may feel faster because grip exchanges are different. Speed is not the objective. Learning to keep balanced posture and communicate during drills matters more than trying to outmuscle a partner.
Grip alternatives
Practice control using body contact rather than cloth.
Movement and balance
Use hips, frames and angles to escape or improve position.
Shared BJJ fundamentals
Control, posture and timing still matter just as much as they do in Gi classes.
What to bring to No-Gi training
Ask the front desk which clothing rules apply to the session. Typically, No-Gi grappling uses fitted athletic tops and training shorts or leggings without unsafe pockets, zippers or hard fasteners. The academy can confirm its exact dress code; do not assume a specific uniform is provided.
Practice good mat hygiene: clean training clothes, trimmed nails and no jewelry. If you are completely new, tell the instructor before class so they can help you understand partner-drilling etiquette and the meaning of tapping.
Confirm attire
Check the academy’s current requirements before the session.
Keep it controlled
Avoid sudden movements and respect your training partner’s tap.
Train both if useful
Many students benefit from the technical differences between Gi and No-Gi.
